Writing & Renewal

at Sunflower Retreats in Costa Rica

with Janet Lucy and Sarah Clark

January 18 ~ 24, 2017

As the new year begins, Costa Rica calls us to the jungle and the sea, where we will settle into Sunflower Retreats, a luscious eco-resort on the southern tip of the Nicoya Península. A mosaic of rainforest, rolling hills, mountains and creeks surround the resort with lookout points to the Pacific Ocean and beaches of Mal Pais. The eco-friendly lodge, used exclusively by Sunflower Retreats guests, offers four spacious double rooms with a front sitting porch slung with hammocks and rocking chairs facing the butterfly and hummingbird gardens. A waterfall jacuzzi and swimming pool are steps away. Here we will write, relax, and re-source ourselves together as we discover and celebrate our connections with the cycles of nature–the sun and moon, oceans and tides, and our inner ebbs and flows. Under the Balsamic Moon we’ll look inward and gaze out into the starry sky, dreaming our seeds and visions for the new year.

We invite you to join us in an intimate circle of like-spirited women for six spacious days and nights with a menu of creative inspiration and delicious delights, remembering that we are our most radiant beings when we are true to our selves, and honor our divine feminine rhythms. Our focus will be on the essential renewal and re-sourcing of our intrinsic radiance.

Madonnas, Saints and Goddesses in Sicily ~ A Springtime Journey of Renewal on Persephone’s Island

with Janet Lucy and Helena Hill

Watercolor by Helena Hill

Sicily, the “Pearl in the Mediterranean,” holds the historical roots of many ancient goddesses from Greece and Italy, and has been a place of exploration and pilgrimage since antiquity. Hearing the call, our heroine’s journey will take us to many of the mythological sites sacred to the ancient goddesses, saints and madonnas. In a scenic setting on the slopes of Mount Etna facing the Mediterranean Sea, we will weave leisurely days of writing and painting with inspirational excursions on the island, as we remember and renew our divine feminine spirits.

San Leonardello Farmhouse, where we will stay for ten days, is an “agriturismo” — an organic farm surrounded by a citrus orchard bearing lemons, oranges and kumquat which are processed into marmalades, limoncello, kumquat and orange liquor. Authentic Sicilian cuisine will nourish our goddess bodies and spirits.

A Women’s Writing Adventure and Mystical Experience in Peru

with Janet Lucy and Helena Hill

DSCN0117MA27091165-0053

The ancient cities of Lima and Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru are the backdrop and inspiration for this awe-some women’s adventure where we will explore the Incan spiritual tradition through writing and art. In this sacred tradition “Four Words” have been used for self-discovery and transformation. “To be silent,” “to know,” “to want,” and “to dare” will be the prompts that guide us, and we will incorporate the Andean principle of “Ayni,” or “reciprocity,” as a spiritual practice. This will truly be a heroine’s journey…an opportunity to deepen your writing and spiritual exploration, heighten your senses through color, textures and spectacular vistas, and paint them into your journal, on an adventure to one of the most powerful sacred sites in the world.

Creating the Visual Travel Journal

and Exploring the Art of Travel Writing

in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

with Janet Lucy and Terrie Adden

Photo of San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is an artistic and colorful backdrop for spirited women’s creative pursuits, and offers an endless source of inspiration and material. We will stay at Casa de Las Ventanas, a private home in the neighborhood of Colonial Mexiquito and an easy 15-minute walk to the Centro. The house is spacious, light-filled and open, offering sweeping views of the rolling hills with confetti-colored houses, the city’s exquisite architecture, and fireworks at night. An expansive roof-top deck is a spectacular spot to watch the sunset and gaze at the stars.

During our retreat, we will focus on the “Visual Travel Journal,” a creative repository of travel writing & poetry, sketching & watercolor, collage, photos, and momentos. We will also explore the art of travel writing, creating colorful, sensory vignettes of our experience.

Awaken Your Senses and Deepen Your Connection

To Writing and Nature

Casa Montemar is a tropical hacienda with a backyard jungle and panoramic ocean view, overlooking the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Palm and plantain trees enhance the luscious landscape, while an abundance of tropical flowers wander throughout the yard. There is a pool for dipping and swimming, a shaded rancho for reading and lounging; tree slung hammocks; and plenty of patios and balconies for scenic reflection. A verandah facing the jungle is the perfect setting for our writing circles, where we’ll be inspired by white faced monkeys, colorful toucans and scarlet macaws. At night fireflies and occasional thunderstorms light up the darkness. The beach is a short walk down a nearby path, and the expansive coastline goes on forever, ideal for morning walks, sunset strolls, and soothing ocean swims.
